Here we are at the start of the day. So fresh and so clean.
And then this happens.
The Pretty Muddy Women‘s Mud Run is fantastic. Well organized, friendly staff, girl power, costumes, craziness, plus everything I’ve come to expect from a mud run with a couple of differences. This is the third mud run I’ve done at the Pocahontas State Park outside of Richmond, Va. It’s a beautiful park and a great place for this type of run. Each of the three, The Muddy Buddy, The Foam Fest and the Pretty Muddy have been special in their own unique way.
If you have never run a mud run or any type of 5K before, the Pretty Muddy is a great event to start with. Nobody is out there trying to “PR” (set a personal record), everyone is supportive of their fellow woman. It’s a fun, friendly event and a great time to spend with your girls. The obstacles are do-able and if you’re scared of heights, or mud or if you just need a breather, you can skip them. You get a medal, a flavored water and a granola bar at the finish line. (I kind of needed a tee shirt, so I had to buy one. My only real complaint of the day.)
At each of the other events at the finish line I am so excited, so proud, feeling like such a badass. And then I remember that I have to get home. Dirty. Gross. I end up stripping down in a field with a towel around me for some modesty. It’s my least favorite party of the mud run. The best part of Pretty Muddy? They have a changing tent. WHAT??!?! Awesome.
We didn’t do costumes this time, but I saw a lot of fantastic ones out there. As the kids get older, I want them to do these crazy things with me (from time to time, I still need my mommy alone time!) I saw this adorable family at the start line and then again at the finish. I had to get their picture. Wonder Woman? BE STILL MY HEART! Momma, you are empowering this little lady to take on the world. Wanda, you won motherhood Saturday and I can’t wait to do this with my babies next time. (Pretty Muddy does have a family run, we just couldn’t fit it into our day with football season.)
Ladies, take the time out. Take the time for yourselves and go be with your girlfriends for a morning. You don’t have to be a runner. Walk it. Dance it. Gallop it. You don’t have to do all the obstacles! Scared of heights? The thought of getting muddy makes you queezy? SKIP IT. You’re not getting graded on the durn thing! Walk with your girls and be the paparazzi – take pictures of your girlfriends looking ridiculous. Life gets in the way of having fun so often. Being a mom means cleaning up other peoples messes All.Damn.Day. It means saying things like “please don’t play in the dirt in your new school shoes”. We say things like “please go wash your hands” and “your bedroom looks like a pig pen” and “seriously, I JUST cleaned this bathroom”. One time, just ONE time, be the one that makes the mess. Do a trust fall into a huge pile of mud and remember what it feels like to be a kid and play in the dirt. Do this with your girlfriends or do this with the kiddos. Just get out of your comfort zone and go do it.
