Wow. So, Pretty Muddy. It’s really happening. (And so is the FoamFest 5K. And probably a Dirty Girl.) I guess I am kind of addicted to the thought of running in mud. And why wouldn’t I be? I had a blast doing my first one last year and I’ve seen so many of my fellow moms having an absolute blast doing some crazy events lately.
This past fall mom, business owner and live-saver to me (she has created MANY of the Diva’s outfits and costumes), Dana, tried her hand at a Pretty Muddy. Her pictures made it look like so much fun that I knew this was one of the events I had to sign up for this year. I asked Dana about her experience and she was happy to share her thoughts with me.
Dana is a 34-year-old mom to three beautiful kids (6, 4 and a 10-month-old at the time of the run!), a wife and business owner. As a mom she takes pride in instilling a healthy lifestyle for her kids and showing them by example is a great start. The kids also enjoyed being involved in her training runs and got quite a kick out of the mud run. They were pretty proud of their mom and the muddy mess she turned out with in the end!
Was Pretty Muddy your first Mud Run?
Yes, I had been excited to try a mud run and this seemed like an ideal first time! After having run a variety of road races since high school the mud was quite tricky, but a fun new experience.
Why did you pick Pretty Muddy?
A few friends with a bit of mud running experience created a team and invited me to join them. This was the first one I’d seen exclusively for women with an approach to just have fun with no pressure of competing attached. Pretty Muddy was a great bonding experience giving myself and teammates a sense to empowerment for women in a challenging and fun experience.
What was your training plan and did you feel prepared?
I kept with my regular running schedule of 3 days a week and upped my mileage using a 5k training guide. To prepare for the mud I took some advice from experienced mud runners and wore fitted clothing to avoid being weighed down by the thick mud. We added a little girly kick by creating decorative team t-shirts and pink tutus!
*** I love that all of our “training plans” include costumes. Maybe that’s why I love mud runs so much? Hmmm?
Would you do it again? Why?
I would absolutely run it again, it was a great experience to play like a kid again and overcome any hesitation I might have had climbing obstacles or getting dirty! I would recommend this run to my friends as it’d be a great fun first introduction into mud running!
What was your favorite part?
Completing the run with my all of my teammates. My favorite obstacle would have to be the tunnel of bubbles, it was unanticipated slippery mess!
Thanks, Dana! I hope that was painless. Check out Dana’s business The Giggling E. She’s hosting a sale right now, 15% off all in stock items, just use the code SPRING2013.
I think I’m most excited about this event because of why you signed up: this event is exclusively for women with an approach to just have fun with no pressure of competing attached. So, ladies, what are you waiting for? Come on and get Pretty Muddy with us or start a team of your own wherever you live. We are going to have a blast and we are totally wearing costumes.
And guys, not to leave you out, you can do the 5K Foam Fest with us. Celebrate the moms in your life and run on the Saturday of Mother’s Day weekend with team Bold and Sparkly in Richmond, VA! (Costumes optional, if you’re lame and don’t want to wear a costume.)

Thank you so much for this post! I was just selected to be a blogger for this event (in Sacramento!) and I have never done a mud run before. I’m a little nervous about the obstacles, but it looks like a lot of fun and I am very excited. Dana looks like she had a great time!
I hope you love it and become addicted like I have! And Welcome to the Pretty Muddy Blogging team!
Looks like so much fun! I am planning on doing my first mud runs this summer, so reading about other awesome ladies doing it gets me so pumped!!!
